The Causes of Dark Circles Under Your Eyes

Dark circles under the eyes have become a common factor these days. In earlier days, this was the sign of old age but today, you can find even youngsters facing this problem.
Different people have different opinion. Some think that dark circles under the eyes are caused due to lack of sleep and some believe that the root cause of this problem is some deficiency or other.
However, there are several reasons for the formation of dark circles under the eyes.
Some of the more common causes of dark circles under the eyes are:

a) Thinning skin:
This is one of the major causes.
With age, the skin under the eyes and the fat pad becomes thinner and the blood vessels to become more noticeable and thus the appearance of dark circles. This area of skin needs to be protected from the sun as sunlight may further weaken the skin and thereby worsening the problem.
b) Allergies:
Dark circles under the eyes can also appear due to allergies to certain airborne substances like pet dander, pollen and dust. People often rub their itchy eyes and it results in dark circles under the eyes. Other type of allergies such as food allergies or sensitivities can also result in dark circles.
c) Genetics:
It is also true that dark circles under the eyes runs in families. People having fair skin or deep set eyes are more prone to noticeable dark circles under the eyes.
d) Fluid retention:
Dark circles are often the result of blood vessels under the eyes that become dilated and engorged. Other common causes include excess intake of dietary salt and smoking. Any condition that causes fluid retention like heart, thyroid, kidney, liver diseases can be a reason for dark circles.
e) Lack of sleep:
The wise have always believed that lack of sleep is the main reason for dark circles under the eyes. Research has shown that a lack of sleep can make skin take on a paler appearance allowing the blood vessels to be more visible and thereby giving the appearance of bluish or dark circles.
f) Iron deficiency:
Iron deficiency or anemia may result in a bluish tinge below the eyes.
g) Dehydration:
Lack of water inside the body also causes dark circles below the eyes.
