What may seem to be an acne scar is not in reality a scar, rather it may simply be just be a red spot where the acne spot has run its course. These small, red spots known as macules, and these may appear similar to a scar but unlike an acne scar, will disappear completely in about six months or so, sometimes a little longer depending on the body chemistry of the person.

In some other cases, following the results of an Acne lesion has healed there may be some discoloration in the skin’s pigment, and this in many cases can also be mistaken for acne scars. These under normal circumstance typically disappear in approximately 12 to 18 months. They tend to grow lighter as time passes and eventually match the color of the skin, but while they may appear to the eye as scars, are not truly acne scars but simply skin discolorations.
