For a lot of us, it seems like most of the night is spent tossing and turning, at the mercy of stress and racing thoughts. Conventional methods don’t seem to work – what can we do to deal with problems going to sleep at night? It might be time to try a new solution.

If you keep having problems going to sleep at night and the usual tricks do nothing to solve them, maybe it’s time to try something new.

Catching some Zzz’s isn’t easy for everybody. But that’s just what the tips below are for. Before resorting to drastic sleep-inducing measures, give the methods listed here a try first.

* Avoid eating large amounts of food before going to bed at night. This can cause indigestion, leading to trouble sleeping.

*If you have problems going to sleep quickly and easily, and your diet allows, eat one to one-and-a-half ounces of a carbohydrate 30 minutes before bedtime.

* A comfortable bed means better sleep. Pay attention to how your mattress and pillows feel at night and arrange them to suit your sleeping habits. Make sure that your bed isn’t too firm or too lumpy. If you can’t arrange your bedding, consider purchasing new bedding that will be appropriate.

* Keep a journal of your thoughts. One big reason that a lot of us are kept up at night is because of racing thoughts. One way you might be able to deal with this problem is by writing down your thoughts, concerns, and worries. You can even look for solutions before you go to sleep. By getting these thoughts out of your head, there’s a better chance you’ll have a good night’s sleep.

* Prepare for bed. Many people who have problems going to sleep at night aren’t prepared. A good schedule for waking up and going to bed is important to addressing this. If you aren’t ready, you’ll find yourself staying up later than you should.

* Make sure that your sleep environment is inviting. If you’re uncomfortable where you’re going to sleep at night, you’ll have more trouble sleeping. One thing that can happen is treating the bedroom as an area where you do nothing but sleep. Avoid watching television, working on the computer, or paying bills in your bedroom if you want to avoid problems going to sleep at night.

You should be able to improve your sleep just by making a few adjustments to your lifestyle and habits. You won’t necessarily have to make serious changes. It’s easy to get a good night’s sleep if you’re comfortable, prepared, and have freed your mind of distracting thoughts. Soon, problems going to sleep at night can be long forgotten, and you can enjoy peaceful nights.
