Do you or someone you know smoke? Have you considered trying to stop smoking? Here are some reasons to stop smoking that you might have heard before, but maybe this is all new.

One thing that doesn’t seem to be well-known is that 30% of all cancers in the United States is caused by smoking. Lung cancer is the number one killer of all the cancers, killing over 150,000 every year. That’s sad enough, but what is even more sad is that 90% of all lung cancer is caused by smoking. Sounds like a very good reason to stop smoking.

Other cancers that cigarettes cause are mouth, esophagus, throat, cervical and tongue cancers. If you smoke and do not eat very much fruits and vegetables and do not exercise, your risk of any of these cancers increases.

Respiratory complications such as emphysema and tuberculosis are other dangers that smokers face. For instance, those who smoke are 73% more susceptible to getting infected with tuberculosis and then are 40-60% chance of the TB becoming active.

Cigarettes contain 4,800 hazardous chemicals. Of those, 69 are known carcinogens (which cause cancer). One of those carcinogens is carbon monoxide, the same poison that is found in the exhaust of vehicles.

You might wonder why anyone willingly put these dangerous chemicals into their bodies. One reason is that smoking is addictive. Once you begin, it is hard to stop smoking. Here are some tips to quit smoking to help you stop.

First, you need to want to stop smoking. Second, if you try and fail, don’t feel bad. On average it takes six attempts to succeed and break the habit.

Third, get help from friends, family, and, if you need it, prescription drugs from your doctor. Fourth, stay away from friends who do smoke. It is hard enough to stop smoking, but surrounding yourself with smokers makes it even harder to succeed.

Fifth, don’t give up. Keep trying until you succeed. Your health will improve, your will feel better, and you will help your family as well. Take these quit smoking tips and go break this deadly habit.
